Privacy policy

Last updated: 7 November 2026

This policy covers whatsapp-mcp, the open-source software presented on this site (the Claude Desktop extension, the command-line program and the installer), and this website. In short: the software runs on your computer, and the project collects no data at all.

Who we are

whatsapp-mcp is an independent open-source project, published under the MIT license at github.com/abonur/whatsapp-mcp. It is not affiliated with WhatsApp, Meta or Anthropic. Contact: GitHub issues.

What the project collects

Nothing. There is no account, no server run by the project, no telemetry, no analytics and no crash reporting. The project never receives your messages, contacts, phone number or files.

What is stored on your computer

To work, the software keeps these on your own computer, in folders that belong to your user account:

  • the keys of the WhatsApp linked-device session, as WhatsApp Web keeps in your browser;
  • an archive of your messages, chats and contact names, so they can be searched;
  • attachments you ask to download, in a media folder inside your send folder, so they can be sent on;
  • technical logs about the connection and the background service.

Apart from attachments, everything is in ~/Library/Application Support/whatsapp-mcp on Mac, %LOCALAPPDATA%\whatsapp-mcp on Windows and ~/.local/share/whatsapp-mcp on Linux.

Connections the software makes

  • WhatsApp's servers, as a linked device, to receive and send your messages. WhatsApp's own privacy policy applies to that connection.
  • GitHub, only when you download, install or upgrade the software.

It makes no other network connection.

Your AI assistant

When you ask your assistant something, it may call the software's tools, for example to search your messages. The results of those calls, which can include message contents, contact names and phone numbers, become part of your conversation and are sent to the assistant's provider: Anthropic for Claude. They handle that data under their own privacy policy, as they do for everything else you write in the conversation. Messages that the assistant does not look up are not sent.

The software sends a WhatsApp message or file only after showing the assistant a preview and receiving a second, explicit confirmation of that exact content, which the assistant should obtain from you.

Deleting your data

Ask the assistant to disconnect WhatsApp from this computer and delete the messages: it unlinks the device from your WhatsApp account, stops the background service and deletes the archive. You can also remove the device from your phone (WhatsApp › Linked devices) and delete the folder listed above. Your send folder, including downloaded attachments, is never deleted automatically: remove it yourself if you want to.

Changes

Changes to this policy are published on this page, and every version is kept in the project's public history.
